Obituary for George Schmitz

George Schmitz
George Richard Schmitz, longtime resident of Fraser, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of his family on March 15, 2018. He was 83 years of age.

George was born in Detroit, Michigan on May 7, 1934, son of the late Catherine Milske. In December of 1956, he joined and served our country honorably in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was sent to Germany for two years where he was a Military Police Officer. He was united in marriage to his beloved Sylvia Ann Stirling on August 11, 1959. The couple first resided in Detroit until building their home in Fraser in 1970. Their union was blessed with four beautiful children of whom they loved and adored. George was a Licensed Master Plumber for Plumbers Local 98 and retired from Ford Motor Company after many dedicated years. He enjoyed the great outdoors, fishing, boating and golfing. He especially enjoyed vacationing with his wife and family on Siesta Key, Florida. George loved his family, and he was an inspiring example of integrity and strength. George always went out of his way to make people laugh and smile. His own smile would light up a room, and his good nature and sense of humor would make everyone feel at ease. Making everyday count, he was always leading by example, teaching life lessons and inspiring others. "You are the author of your own life story" was something he would say often to his family. George will always be remembered as a craftsman who could design, build and repair anything. In his retirement years, he enjoyed cooking for his family and friends. He extended his passion and love for life to everyone he met. Above all, he loved his family and spending time with them which gave him the greatest joy. He will be deeply missed and will always be cherished in our hearts.

George is the devoted husband of the late Sylvia; cherished father of Kenneth Schmitz, Kathy Schmitz, Susan Schmitz and Oodie Cavaliere; dearest grandfather of Elizabeth Schmitz and Cecilia, Sammy and Joey Cavaliere; loving brother-in-law of George (Nancy) Stirling and the late June (Bill) Sell; and dear uncle of Kathy (David) Robertson and Billy (Anissa) Sell.

Arrangements are entrusted with the Faulmann & Walsh Golden Rule Funeral Home of Fraser. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Operation Smile or the Capuchin Soup Kitchen of Detroit. A memorial gathering will be at Christ Church of Fraser, 34385 Garfield Rd, Fraser, held on Sunday, May 6, 2018, 3pm until the time of service at 4pm. Share memories at
